Interim Report of J. Banerjee Committee

On the basis of the above enunciation and upon elimination of the ‘Petrol theory’ or even any ‘miscreant activity story’ both being totally absurd, the fire on Sabarmati Express on 27th February 2002 cannot but be ascribed to be an accidental fire which engulfed the coir, the foam and the latex available on berths coupled with the luggage of the passengers causing thereby the smell of burning and thereafter dense smoke culminating into leaping flames and not a deliberate attempted event.

Executive Summary of an Enquiry into the reasons for burning of Coach-6 of the Sabarmati Express

Almost 32 months later, the Hazards Centre has undertaken an investigation into the probable causes of the fire. The study was initiated because of increasing concern over the manner in which previous investigations had been conducted and the absence of an explanation consistent with the facts as recorded.
